Right at the end you mentioned "supporting methylation" in terms of it influencing a lot more than just the methylation pathways? I recently was prescribed SAMe supplementation for methylation (COMT) support after a dutch test. The naturopath said I may need to take these for life. That rings alarm bells for me. I have wanted to avoid supplements, instead sticking to food based nutrients, but I am trying the ones she recommended as I needed the guidance solving some long term hormonal issues. Do you have a post about methylation and supplements for it? I tried looking through a couple of your articles about supplements. I try to keep up with you but the depth is challenging.

Methionine, an amino acid, becomes SAMe in the body via the MAT enzyme. MAT needs B12, B9, B6, Mg, Zn, etc.

Homocysteine can also be converted back to SAMe.

Long story short, food can provide for all of these things! You might find it helpful to supplement SAMe as a bridge. However, doing so in the long term could put pressure on these other micronutrients.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Kathleen. I think you are right about using the SAMe as a bridge only. I question the idea that there is a genetic error/issue that can not be changed. I did want the help from a naturopath with experience to get me onto an upward spiral (It is just that I run into difficulties questioning the advice). I want to use the other supplements she prescribed as a bridge too as I do have deficits. I have been worried about the effects of taking supplements, so I previously avoided any that were not food. The body has its own intelligence and is pretty finely tuned, seems like you could muck things up easily. My diet is good (we produce lots of our own foods -vege, meat, dairy and eggs organically). I think there are other issues in the way of absorption/utilisation. I appreciate your input thanks again :-).

Methylation problems can stem from diet, but if you are eating well and still seeing problems it’s more likely environmental (ie, not enough sunlight and heat in the summer, not enough cold exposure and darkness in the winter). Most don’t realize there is a time of day when each nutrient should be used and that the lights we are exposed to (or lack) determine our body’s ability to flip the right switches at the right times.

You are right I did not know about that. I have been working on getting good light exposure throughout the day anyway, but was not aware of the link with nutrient use in the body. Perhaps the fact that I have been roasting in the garden weeding a lot this summer is the reason I am starting to feel better. Thank you for commenting, I found it really helpful. There is a lot more information out there now than when I first started having problems years ago.

What are your concerns with aspirin?

Thanks for talking about this low iodine diet topic. Very interesting point about the conflicting aspirin vs cortisol in Pufa conversions. Peace
